Testimonies

Leadership throughthe eyes of colleagues.

Recorded testimonies at the launch of the memoir Belajar dari Kuntoro, 17 December 2024. Quotes are taken word for word from the recordings and translated.

  • Pak Kuntoro: a man of ideas, a man of integrity, a man of commitment, and a man of action. Because the results were real.

    Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono

6th President of the Republic of Indonesia

  • Green meant happy, yellow meant worried, and red meant a minister went pale. That was Kuntoro. Objective, straight, telling the truth, but constructive. What was red became yellow, what was yellow became green.

    Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono

    on UKP4 in cabinet meetings

  • Every report was audited by international auditors, and everything came back clear and clean. That was how he worked.

    Jusuf Kalla

Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia 2004–2009, 2014–2019

  • Memory stays alive only when it is turned into real steps with real results. Turning ideas into reality is the crucial stage, because that is where our spirit, our nerve, and our organisational skill are tested.

    Boediono

Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia 2009–2014

  • Every value Pak Kuntoro held and taught is, frankly, timeless. And though he taught, he never lectured. It was always a discussion, give and take.

    Yuli Ismantoro

journalist, contributor to the memoir Belajar dari Kuntoro

  • BRR was the only post-disaster reconstruction agency that secured almost 100% of the international commitments. Why could Kuntoro do it? An effective management style, and an integrity that made donors trust that money sent would reach its target.

    Sofyan A. Djalil

    Minister of State-Owned Enterprises 2007–2009

  • He was deeply political, but never swept along by it. He understood politics as a kind of energy, and he could use that energy to get important policies through.

    Kevin Evans

    former Australian diplomat, BRR colleague

  • He spoke about zero tolerance toward corruption. This was non-negotiable. On performance, we can still talk; on corruption, non-negotiable.

    Faisal Baabud

    Deputy Head, BRR Aceh–Nias

  • Kuntoro was an official who worked much and sought nothing for himself; he never chased publicity. UKP4 was very powerful, yet he held no grudges. His assessments were careful, objective, and fair.

    Todung Mulya Lubis

lawyer, Indonesian Ambassador to Norway 2018–2023

  • For the first time since independence, the state showed up among the people of Aceh, down to the villages and the coast. Through BRR, the face of the state was compassionate, open to dialogue, participatory. This republic owes him a great debt.

    Ahmad Humam Hamid

    Acehnese academic, BRR advisory board

  • Because we set a four-year horizon from the start, everyone's goal was the result. No more “this is my territory”. Start right, intend right, and strategy and operations follow on their own.

    Amin Subekti

Deputy for Finance and Planning, BRR Aceh–Nias

  • He is the finest leader I have ever worked with in my life, and I've worked with many very fine leaders. His sense of integrity was first-rate. Seeing him work there every day, he fought corruption every day.

    Bill Nicole

    Lead Advisor, BRR Aceh–Nias, 2005–2009

  • He showed us how to carry one concept all the way through to its implementation on the ground.

    Dermawan Wibisono

Professor at ITB, co-founder of SBM ITB

  • I cannot pay you what you earn abroad, but I can give you the chance to fix this country.

    Yanuar Nugroho

quoting Kuntoro on being recruited to UKP4 in 2012; later Deputy II, Presidential Staff Office

  • Building an organisation does not start with grand plans. It starts with building the people first.

    Jann Hidayat Tjakraatmadja

Professor at ITB, co-founder of SBM ITB
